The Treehouse

Perched in the tree line, this modest apartment building negotiated its unusual environs to allow twelve functional, light filled, airy residences.

Located in Footscray, this project typifies the challenges of a rapidly evolving suburb pitting detached suburban house against medium density development. Acknowledging the incredibly small site, this project negotiates this complex condition through a simple, uncomplicated geometry, and extensive use of domestic materials namely face brick and steel cladding. Through extensive negotiations with local council, the fundamental orientation of the building shifted the conventional side boundary sheer wall to a highly articulated series of balconies and windows permitting gratuitious north light and unubstructed views, providing the one and two bedroom spaces with an atmosphere belaying their modest proportions.
