Apple Foundation

The Apple Foundation Program is an intensive short-course program introducing students to, and enabling them to develop in, the Apple product ecosystem. In developing a dedicated space at RMIT, the project needed to balance the predominate cosmetic context at RMIT - one of a frenetic energy analogous with a hunger for learning - with the more restrained, material-centric and biophilic language associated with Apple, the world's second biggest brand. To add to the challenge, the available space was at odds with the production of a conventional learning and teaching environment - full of glass, cold, and loud.

Working extensively with both Apple and RMIT project partners, and recognising the importance of balancing the cosmetic outcome against a sustainable, cost-efficient and time-sensitive building outcome, Carter Studio focused on the existing vaulted cement sheet ceiling. Instead of sending this to landfill, we 'nipped and tucked' the heights before over-cladding it with a mixture of timber and soft claddings. Furthering a 'reuse and up-cycle' approach we repurposed existing glazing as whiteboards and existing lighting as a bold chandelier.

The final outcome reflects the nature of the program - a hybrid of both RMIT and Apple, and something new in its own right.
